Batteries - from the AA size cells we use in practically every electronic device (from toys to portable music players) to car batteries, they are the force that drives all mobile and portable electronics. In the world of phones in particular, the use of batteries is the most surefire way of ensuring portability. Mobile devices such as cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, wireless phones, etc all use some form of batteries. Nowadays, the most common battery found in cell phones to PDAs is the Lithium Ion (Li-On) battery due to its energy-to-weight ratio, slow of loss charge and many other factors besides. Another popular form is the Lithium Ion Polymer (Li-Poly, also affectionately known as Lipos) battery which is being increasingly used in devices despite its high cost. Some common products which use Li-Poly batteries are PDAs such as the iPhone, laptop computers, portable MP3 players, Sony PS3 Wireless controllers, etc. Due to the light weight and flexibility of these batteries are also being used in radio-controlled aircraft, etc where weight and shape are of critical importance. These batteries do have their downsides (such as that the life of the battery is limited and not dependent on number of charges/discharges, Li-on batteries are often recalled because they fail safety standards and tend to overheat and in severe cases combust or explode), however, the fact is that at the current point in time and given the state of our technology the Li-on and Lipos are the best solution for all our mobile devices.
