Gateway Inc. (originally Gateway 2000) was founded in 1985 as a computer manufacturer and supplier following Dell's successful model of direct sales. Gateway was a regular fixture on the Fortune 500 list of largest companies worldwide but since 2006 has dropped out of the list. Gateway was acquired by Acer an estimated $710 million. Gateway was famous for shipping its computers in black and white spotted boxes imitating cow markings as a reference to its Iowa roots. Gateway produces LCD monitors, desktop PCs, laptops, servers, notebooks, etc. Gateway computers use Windows as their operating system of choice but also ship barebones PCs (meaning without an operating system preinstalled).
