JVC

JVC is a Japanese company. JVC stands for Victor Company of Japan as JVC was originally a subsidiary of the US company the Victor Talking Machine company. However, JVC severed relations with foreign companies during World War II and Matsushita then held the majority stake in the company from the early 1950's till recently in 2007. JVC was the pioneer of the VHS format and won what is known by some as the first of the format wars. JVC released the VHS format a year after SOny launched Betamax, while it is not known for certain why VHS won the videotape format war, it is believed that consumers regarded the longer recording time of VHS cassettes as more important the quality of Betamax tapes. Another reason seems to be the greater availability of VHS tapes. JVC was the company that developed the Dual Layer Rewritable DVD format. JVC sponsored the FIFA World Cup 2002 and had previously sponsored Arsenal FC for 17 years, the longest sponsorship of its kind in the English Premier League.
